‘Khela Samapt’ for INDIA bloc: BJP reacts to Congress-DMK fallout in Tamil Nadu

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Wednesday, May 6, took a swipe at the Congress after it extended support to Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) to form government in Tamil Nadu, despite being in alliance with the DMK.

BJP national spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla said that Congress has a history of “betraying” its allies. Further, he slammed the Opposition’s INDIA bloc and claimed that it is “falling apart like a pack of cards,” lacking any common ideology or vision.

Notably, the Tamil Nadu Congress Committee (TNCC) and the Congress Legislative Party (CLP) have decided to extend full support to the TVK to form the government in Tamil Nadu.

“Our support shall be conditional upon the TVK keeping out from this alliance any communal forces that do not believe in the Constitution of India,” it added.

Reacting to this, Poonawalla claimed that the INDIA bloc had effectively come to an end after the results of the 2026 Assembly elections were announced on May 4.

“Aisa Koi Saga Nahi, Jisko Congress ne Thaga Nahi. Imagine what they will do to SP if they did this to DMK! Told you 4th May- Indi alliance ka THE END ! Khela Samapt,” he wrote on X.

Meanwhile, the DMK described the Congress’ decision to extend support to TVK as a “backstab” by its long-time national ally.

“The Congress has decided to ally with the TVK, pledging their support to the party. I think they have backstabbed… They have backstabbed the people of Tamil Nadu. They have backstabbed the mandate given by the people of Tamil Nadu,” PTI quoted DMK spokesperson Saravanan Anadurai as saying.

Notably, TVK bagged 108 seats in the 234-member Tamil Nadu Assembly, falling short of the halfway mark. At present, TVK required support of 10 MLAs to form the government. The Congress won five seats, whole the Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) got four seats. The CPI and CPI-M bagged two seats each.

The outgoing ruling DMK won 59 seats and the AIADMK ended with 47 seats. The BJP secured one seat.

The Congress fought the 2026 Assembly elections in Tamil Nadu in an alliance with the DMK, while the BJP had a tie up with the AIADMK.
